Description
In addition to carp, the word "Koi" also means 'love' and 'affection' in Japanese. This is why Koi are often depicted as a symbol of love and friendship in Japan. The Koi carp is seen as a powerful and extraordinary animal. A Japanese myth told about the fact the Koi is capable of swimming against the current in rivers, climbing up waterfalls and showing no fear of the animal was ever captured. The animal is therefore linked to perserverence and overcoming obstacles.
